Bald eagle and golden eagles at Game and Fish Commission Building, State Capitol, December 27, 1963 [View 1] [graphic] / Ernie Deane [photographer]. 1963.

Negative taken for January 5, 1964, Arkansas Gazette article "The Eagle - A Vanishing American," E5:2. Deane met George Purvis of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Cleve Cabler of the Little Rock Audubon Society. Both these men helped him understand the nature of the bald eagle. At the time the bald eagle was protected by the United States government, both because it is the national bird, and because it is endangered. Eagles don't receive their white head plumage until the age of four. Until then they are considered immature. The article's photographs include many eagles. The mascot of the Eighth Wisconsin Infantry regiment in 1864 was "Old Baldy" who would eventually become very famous in the United States. Other photographs are of golden eagles, and etchings of Civil War soldiers with mascot eagles. All of these eagle examples were located in the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, with exception of the "Old Baldy" photograph. It was obtained from the National Audubon Society magazine.
